Where does France stand?

Maintaining its prestige seems like quite an old-fashioned concept, reminiscent of the ancien régime. Nevertheless, for today’s French leaders, this concept defines France’s role and global position. But what prestige? That of France’s former status as a major power with a return to rear alliances, as some seem to advocate? Such an attitude would be suicidal, as it would lead to a dismantling of the structure that has been patiently built in Europe since the 1950s. Therefore, understanding the status of France nowadays requires a dramatically new approach challenging the idea of Europe as serving France’s interests primarily and seeing France more as a key player within Europe. Quel rang pour la France ?

Tenir son rang. Le concept a quelque chose de désuet, un parfum d’ancien régime. Il reste que c’est lui qui, dans le chef de la classe dirigeante française, préside, aujourd’hui encore, à la définition du rôle et de la place de la France dans le monde. Quel rang ? L’ancien, celui de la France grande puissance ? Avec un retour aux alliances de revers comme certains semblent le préconiser ? Ce serait suicidaire parce que cela impliquerait la destruction de tout l’édifice européen, patiemment construit depuis les années 1950. Penser le rang de la France aujourd’hui passe donc, selon nous, par une rupture conceptuelle. Il s’agirait de penser le passage de l’idée d’une Europe instrumentale aux desseins de la France, à celle d’une France au cœur de l’Europe. Lire la suite →

The invasion and occupation of Crimea by the Russian army effectively constitutes an act of war. The EU must now realise that it should no longer be allowed to get away with semantic acrobatics. It is a point of departure from which a strong and determined political response can be resolutely developed, in conjunction with the USA, Canada and the largest possible number of democratic countries.

L’invasion et l’occupation de la Crimée par l’armée russe constituent à tous les effets un acte de guerre. Les recours aux acrobaties sémantiques ne sont plus permis : l’Union européenne doit faire ce constat. Il s’agit d’un point de départ indispensable pour pouvoir élaborer avec tout le sang-froid nécessaire une riposte politique forte et déterminée, de concert avec les Etats-Unis, le Canada et le plus grand nombre de pays démocratiques.

Among the numerous invisible elephants that haunt the seats of government of 27 of the 28 EU member-States is the particularly ghostly issue of the British question. How is it possible that a subject as important as the place and the role of the United Kingdom in the EU is being blatantly avoided? The situation, however, is very real. Twenty-seven States have become hostage to one man, David Cameron, who is himself the hostage of another – Nigel Farage, the leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).
